We know we are in an emergency and that the government isn’t doing anywhere near enough.
Right now we are not even on track to limit temperature increases to 2°C.
According to the UN, current policies will lead to around 3°C of warming by the end of the century - but it could easily be 4°C or more.
Many scientists believe 4°C would be ‘incompatible with any reasonable characterisation of an organised, equitable and civilised global community’.
There is still time to prevent these catastrophic levels of heating, but only if we are prepared to take unprecedented action now.
In a nutshell, the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill calls for:
the UK to make and enact a serious plan. This means dealing with our real fair share of emissions so that we don’t go over critical global rises in temperature
our entire carbon footprint be taken into account (in the UK and overseas)
the protection and conservation of nature here and overseas along supply chains, recognising the damage we cause through the goods we consume
those in power not to depend on technology to save the day, which is used as an excuse to carry on polluting as usual
ordinary people to have a real say on the way forward in a citizens’ assembly with bite
With a local context it explains some of the critical problems we face and how the CEE Bill will address them.
With the backing of its supporters, the Winchester CEE Bill Alliance will open a constructive dialogue with MPs Steve Brine and Flick Drummond in order to garner their support for the Bill.
“As signatories of Architects Declare we recognise that the twin crises of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss are the most serious issue of our time. For everyone working in the construction industry, meeting the needs of our society without breaching the earth's ecological boundaries will demand a paradigm shift in our behaviour. The research and technology exist for us to begin that transformation now, but what has been lacking is collective will. The CEE Bill is in important step in the right direction.” Kate Quinlan - McLEAN QUINLAN Architects
“I support the CEE Bill wholeheartedly, it reflects the same values that are behind my business. I wanted to be part of the alliance because at Earthian Zero Waste Shop, we help customers lead more sustainable lives at home but the CEE Bill campaigns for accountability at the highest level to ensure a future for our planet.” Earthian Zero Waste Shop
